News that Scott, whose next film project is Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe, was attached to a Forever War film broke last year: Scott, whose SF credits extend back to Adam Adamant Lives! for the BBC back in the 1960s, has apparently been chasing the rights to the Nebula Award-winning book for 25 years.
In an interview on wharf.co.uk, Scott, now 71, reveals Forever War is not only on the cards but that it will be shot in 3D.
"I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War," he confirmed of his next project after Robin Hood. "I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work, and I've got to go 3D. It's going to be phenomenal."
In the Forever War, Private William Mandella is a hero in spite of himself - a reluctant conscript drafted into an elite military unit. He never wanted to go to war, but is thrown into a conflict with a fierce alien enemy light years from Earth, and with only sub-light travel to the war zone possible Mandella becomes a victiom of time dliation, rapidly losing all connection with the homeworld he grew up on, as he ages normally but many years pass whle he's in transit to various war zones. The book was an allegory on the Vietmam War.
There were two sequels, Forever Free and Forever Peace to the book which won a Nebula Award in 1975 and the Hugo in 1976. Tthe saga has inspired a comic book series, drawn by Belgian artist Marvano - published by NBM in English - and a board game.
In addition to Robin Hood and Forvever War, Scott also apparently has his sight set on making another SF classi - Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. He's also working on a film on the Gucci fashion dynasty and even a possible movie version of the board game Monopoly.
"The studio pays me to do this stuff," he told wharf.co.uk, clearly still in love with the whole process of film making. "I'm getting my rocks off, and it's the best toy set a man could have. That's me in the desert covered in dirt and I'm loving it."
